If you’re a new student at our English language school in Hawaii, we know how challenging it can be – especially for those just beginning their journey to speaking a new language. We have a few tips to help you enjoy your studies and enhance your success.
Set goals. What is your reason for learning English? For instance, if you’re planning to attend a grad school program located in the U.S. or want to study other subjects in a country whose native language is English, it gives you an incentive and motivates you to learn the language. Setting goals also helps you determine which areas of English should be your primary focus.
Keep a diary or journal – and write it in English. Even if it’s just a paragraph or two, jotting down your thoughts, what happened in class today, your goals and ideas, or the highlights of dinner or a movie with friends helps you become more familiar with English and reinforces words in your mind, while improving your spelling.
Read books out loud. It’s important to read novels, newspapers, and other content written in English, but reading out loud also helps you in terms of improving your conversational skills and pronunciation.
Sing along with English language songs. No doubt, if you love music, you’ll hear songs that become your favorites. Sing along, or even consider printing out the lyrics so you clearly understand the words that perhaps you don’t know or can’t understand in the song.
Pay attention to how native English speakers emphasize certain words when they talk. Emphasis is usually placed on verbs, adjectives, and nouns rather than function words. By paying attention to the sound patterns, you’ll be able to better understand what the person is saying.
