Learning English is a skill, and a gradual process, whether you’re speaking, reading, listening or writing. If you’re enrolled in our English language school in Hawaii, or any language program, there are a few “secrets” to being a better speaker, regardless of the level you’re at in your learning. We have a few suggestions to help you become a better speaker we hope you’ll find helpful.
First, realize that speaking requires several things that seem to come at you all at once. You have to listen to a question or what someone is saying before you can answer, understand the question, decide the correct words to use, and try to use correct grammar while pronouncing the words right. A lot to think about, but you can do it!
Here are a few things you can do in and out of the classroom to help with your English speaking abilities.
- Ask questions, and answer those you know the answers to. Never be embarrassed – everyone else in the class is learning, too
- As the teacher asks questions, try to answer them in English in your head
- If possible, sit next to a student who is from a different country than yours
- Tell your parents and families about what you learned, or the events of the day, and tell them in English
- During the lunch break or after class, engage in English conversation with your teachers, classmates and friends
Other things you can do to improve your speaking abilities:
Learn some of the phrases that are commonly used among those in your age group.
Always keep talking. Don’t let the fear of making a mistake stop you. Even those who are native English speakers make mistakes, and you don’t need to worry about being perfect. Your goal is to communicate with others the best you can, and the more you keep talking, the better you will become.
When you’re at home or away from the classroom, give yourself time every day to think about how you would answer a question if asked, or explain a situation. In all your thinking, try to do it in English, rather than your native language.
When you aren’t sure what words mean, always look up the definition. You may want to write out sentences using various words to help you get a better understanding of them, which will help make you a better speaker.
There are all kinds of things you can do to become a better English speaker; these are just a few ideas. Talk in English, think in English and never fear mistakes! Practice is what it takes to succeed.
