Managing your time is important if you’re learning English. Our English language school in Hawaii knows the importance of setting priorities and managing your workload so that you get the most out of your education, and ultimately become skilled in English. Here are a few time management tips to help you.
Create daily to-do lists. By prioritizing and writing down the tasks you need to take care of, it makes it easier to do those things as you gradually tick them off, one by one. Be sure to put the most important tasks at the top of the list!
When is your most productive time of the day? We all have those times we’re more energetic and productive, times we can really get things done. Some people are morning people, others find they work best late at night. Use your most productive time to get those tasks on your to-do list completed.
Learn how to say no. We know it’s hard to turn down dinner or cocktails with friends, or to browse Facebook to see what everyone’s up to. It’s vital that you can control things that are unnecessary, so you can do what IS necessary. Say no when your workload is heavy; when it’s lightened up, you can socialize with friends or do those other things you simply want to do.
Change up where you study or do homework. Sometimes all it takes to get you more motivated is a change of scenery. It’s often easy to get distracted when the family is watching television or you’d rather be playing a video game. Take your studies/work outdoors or to a quiet cafe or other spot. This is a great way to get your brain in gear and reinvigorate yourself, while avoiding all those distractions often found at home.
Use those little gaps of time throughout the day to take care of smaller tasks. Ride a bus or train to work? Waiting for a friend to pick you up? When you have 10 extra minutes here and there in your daily schedule, use them to go over study notes, send off an important email, or read an article (in English) in the newspaper. You’ll be amazed how much you can get done during those small windows of time, and you’ll realize you don’t have to wait until you have an hour or two to take care of every little detail.
It’s important to set priorities and goals when you’re learning a new language, but it’s also important to know how to manage your time and achieve a good balance between work, socializing and learning. Hopefully these tips will help you better manage your time.
