As an English student, there are many things you can do on your own to help make you more proficient in the language, and to reinforce what you have learned. We have a few tips below we think you will find useful.
Listen to English for a few minutes, four or five days of the week. Whether you listen to a television show, online video, or someone who is talking in English, listening is important. Take 10 or 15 minutes a few times a week to really listen, as it will help you understand the meaning of words, how they’re pronounced, and will become a habit that helps you grow your vocabulary immensely.
Before going to sleep, review what you’re learning in English at the moment. Whether reading or a class exercise, quickly go over what you are working on just before drifting off to sleep. This is important because your brain processes this information while you sleep!
Actively search for situations that require you to use English. Perhaps it’s a forum online about a topic you’re interested in, the local newscast, or emailing or texting friends. Find real world situations that force you to speak, write, listen, or read using English. It is important to apply your skills and grow them by using English in everyday situations, outside of the classroom.
Speak out loud, even when you are alone. When you are home by yourself (or even if family is home), it’s highly recommended that you speak English aloud. For example, if you are reading a book, read it out loud. Even if you have thoughts going through your mind, give them a voice – in English. The more you speak the language aloud, the better you will become at pronunciation and speaking clearly.
