For most students who attend our language school in Hawaii, speaking English is top priority. That’s understandable, as communicating verbally is key when you’re going to live in an area where English is the predominant language. What about reading and writing in English? This is important too, for many reasons. Learning to speak the language naturally involves a certain amount of reading and writing, but we’ll take things a little further so you understand just how important it really is to be able to read and write English.
First of all, why is writing in English important?
Not only does writing help you remember words you’ve learned and even visualize their meaning, it reinforces what you’ve learned. It’s good practice to keep a notebook with you with words and their descriptions you’ve learned so far, and to write down any new words you may hear while you’re out and about shopping, dining, or just hanging with friends. Writing in English on a regular basis is a great way to commit new words and phrases to memory, and it helps you understand what those words mean when you include a definition or even a sentence or two using the word/phrase in your notes.
Other reasons writing in English is so important? Think of all the things you do with friends or co-workers who may be native English speakers. From emails to texts and social media, we do a lot of communicating today through typing on computers, phones, or other devices, which is effectively writing.
Now, why is reading English so important?
It’s a great way to add to your vocabulary – and you need to know what’s going on in the world or your community! Reading newspapers, books, magazines, or even a blog or article online written in English is a great way to expand your knowledge. You can look up the meaning of any words or phrases you don’t understand online, or use a dictionary for word definitions.
Think of how critical it is to be able to read English in a real-world setting. For instance, you need to understand the directions on a new medication, or even understand street signs. Consider any bills or communication you may receive in the mail, or how you should clearly understand any contract or agreement that requires your signature. Reading in English is vital!
