As an English language school in Hawaii that’s been around for decades and taught countless students from all around the world, we know there are some smart ways to study and some that aren’t so smart. For instance, what would happen if you only studied when you were in the mood or felt like it? You’d probably never study. In order to reach your best potential, there are some things you need to do.
First, create a study plan. Whether for a week or an entire month, scheduling time to study and sticking to your schedule will make you a more proficient English student.
Understand SMART targets. SMART in this instance stands for Specific, Measurable, Attainable, Relevant, Time-based. What are your specific goals? Wanting to improve your English is not specific, but having the desire to learn expressions used in everyday conversations is. Measurable is naturally something you want to achieve that you can actually measure. For instance, you can’t measure the fact that you want to build your vocabulary, however, when you decide you want to learn five new nouns or 10 new adjectives, it is measurable. It isn’t smart to think you can learn everything there is to know in two weeks or a month. What is smart is setting realistic and attainable goals you can reach! This also helps you feel good about your learning experience and avoids disappointment.
Take advantage of every opportunity whether reading, listening to, or speaking English. Practice makes perfect, and the more you read articles or books on topics you’re interested in, listen to others speak in English/listen to dialogue in movies or television shows, or speak English yourself, the more comfortable you’ll become using your new language skills. Don’t just speak to your classmates or teacher in English, use it in every conversation!
Taking notes and having a quiet area at home where you can concentrate on your studies without distractions or interruption is also important. Make studying a top priority, and take advantage of every opportunity!
