If you’re taking a course at our English language school in Hawaii, or even considering it, there are lots of negative myths out there that can easily make you feel accomplishing your goals isn’t possible. We’re going to dispel some of those English learning myths below, because you CAN achieve your goals and speak English fluently, regardless of whether you’re just beginning or giving it some thought.
I’ll never be able to learn a foreign language. If you tell yourself you can’t do it, then you’re already setting yourself up for failure. The mind is a powerful thing, and capable of collecting new knowledge every day. Think of what you learn when reading a book, watching an educational television show, or even from friends or relatives. It’s no different learning a new language – it’s all in the mindset, so tell yourself you CAN do it, and believe it.
Learning English at my age is impossible. Absolutely not! It doesn’t make any difference if you’re 40, 50, or even 60, we’re never too old to learn. In fact, adults can sometimes learn new things easier, simply because they have experience and are better at problem-solving. Build your confidence by writing English words that are a bit more difficult on index cards and studying them every day – their spelling, pronunciation, meaning, how they’re used in sentences. You’ll feel better about your ability to learn English, regardless of your age!
My life’s too busy to learn English. We all live busy lives these days, and it seems impossible to squeeze in one more thing. The fact is, it doesn’t take hours of your time every day to learn a new language. Organize your time so that you get the most benefit from it, and decide what time of day your brain functions at its best. For some people it’s early morning, for others it may be the afternoon or evening. Whatever time it is, schedule 30 minutes to study, read, write, speak, or whatever it is you need to practice on most. You can do this – and when you want something, you can always find a way to make time.
It’s too boring. Sitting in a classroom and reading a textbook can be boring to anyone! You have to make it fun, which is easy considering you can sing along with your favorite songs, play board games that are in English with friends, go to the movies, and engage in countless other fun activities. Learning can be fun and exciting, so try out a few different things to discover what makes your experience fun, instead of boring.
The truth is, learning English can be something you truly enjoy at any age. You already know how important it is for communicating, your career, and being able to converse with others in almost any country you could visit. At ICC, our English language school in Hawaii makes learning a great experience for people of all ages, young and old.
