People learn things in different ways – they have different learning styles. As one of the most highly regarded English language schools in Hawaii, we know the same is true when learning English; not everyone learns the same way! Some English language students enjoy lessons given by the teacher in the classroom or studying a textbook, while others find these methods boring and therefore of little help. Do you learn best by listening, visually, or by being hands-on?
Those who are visual learners often enjoy learning English by watching movies or television shows in their own language and reading English subtitles, using vocabulary lists or Flashcards, or reading a good book so they actually see the words.
If you learn best by listening, you may be an auditory learner. Many students find listening to, or hearing the English language spoken, the best way to learn, and the most enjoyable. While visual learners want to see, auditory learners prefer to hear, whether they are listening to others carry on a conversation in English or listening to the radio, television, or even an audio book. Listening helps some learners with proper pronunciation and usage of words.
If you’re more of a “hands-on” type of student, you’re most likely a kinesthetic or tactile learner. What does this mean? Basically, kinesthetic learners are those who enjoy physical activity, and a more direct experience. Those who like to touch or work with objects first-hand are tactile learners. You have a better grasp of the English language through active and direct experiences. For instance, you may enjoy hiking with others and learning about the different species of trees, birds, etc.
Everyone has their own learning style when it comes to the English language…which one best suits you? There are no hard and fast rules or methods you must stick to when learning a new language. Whatever works best, use it! You will advance your English skills and become proficient faster.
