We know that English is one of the most difficult languages to learn as a second language. However, students often make mistakes that make learning even more difficult! If you’re a beginner who’s just learning, we want to help you avoid some of these mistakes.
First of all, never be embarrassed when trying to speak the English words or phrases you have learned. Many students aren’t confident about using what they’ve learned when speaking with others who are fluent in English. The fact is, most people will be impressed with the fact that you’re learning a second language! Put yourself out there, and use what you’ve learned as often as possible. This builds on your experience and self-confidence – and never forget how much we learn from our mistakes.
Develop your speaking skills by practicing the language. You can study books all day, but actually speaking English and being repetitive is what will make you more fluent. It’s a skill, just like riding a bicycle.
Focus on intonation (flow, speaking speed, where emphasis is placed) more intensely than pronunciation while practicing your English speaking skills, as this not only makes what you say more interesting, but also helps others understand what you’re saying. Of course pronunciation is important, but intonation is even more important to keep others listening.
When learning at an English language school in Hawaii, be sure to pay attention to your surroundings in terms of the English you hear on television, the radio, even around you when you’re at the supermarket, restaurants, or other places where people are speaking the language. This will not only help you in terms of pronunciation, but also help you learn phrases or strings of words often used in the language.
