So you’ve chosen to attend an English language school in Hawaii; good for you! Not only will you be learning the most important language in the world, but you’ll be doing it in one of the most beautiful and adventurous places on earth. As you probably already know, learning a second language (particularly English) is not an easy task. So, what are some of the biggest challenges you’ll likely face while learning the English language? We’ve included a few below.
Teachers who aren’t qualified. Who is qualified and who isn’t? What teacher speaks the language correctly, and if the teacher’s native language isn’t English, how will vowel sounds or other pronunciations be taught? This is a problem in some learning environments.
Learning environment may be limited. Depending on where you study the English language, the environment and resources play a role in how fast and how well you learn. Sure, textbooks are great, but if you don’t have audio tools and access to people outside of the classroom whose native language is English, along with teachers who can teach proper pronunciations, learning is limited.
Students don’t put forth the effort. Think of other subjects in which students often close their books at the end of class, and until the next class, do nothing else. You can’t take this approach and expect to learn English! Writing essays, learning new words, focusing on pronunciation – it’s critical to make a strong effort both inside and outside of the classroom.
Speaking native languages in the classroom. Many times students find themselves talking to one another in their native language, whether Spanish, German, or any other language. Always use English in the classroom, even when engaging in casual conversation. The more you use it, the easier it will come to you.
Not solving problems on your own. Students are often so dependent on the teacher, they think they can’t figure out anything without guidance. Determining how to solve a problem you encounter in speaking English without the help of the teacher is part of the learning experience! When you’re not in the classroom (or even when you are), make a strong effort to figure out your problem without help. Many people find that those things they must focus hard on to learn on their own stick with them longer.
These are a few of the most common challenges faced by students who are attending an English language school in Hawaii, or any other state/country.
